What are these symtpoms?
What symptoms occur later on?
2-3 weeks
- NIGHT SWEATS
- Malaise
- Anorexia
- Dry cough that become productive
- Chest Pain
- Mucopurulent Sputum
- Hemoptysis common in advanced cases
What do you see in acute exacerbations of Chronic TB?
- High Fever
- Chills
- Generalized Flu Symptoms
- Pleuritic Pain
- Productive Cough
- Crackles/Advenitious Breath Sounds
What does Miliary Tuberculosis cause compared to regular TB?
Little Cavities ALL OVER THE LUNGS instead of just in one place
What are some characteristics of Miliary Tuberculosis?
- Wide Dissemination of Tiny Lesions
- Progresses Slowly
- NECROTIC Ghon Complexes
- –> Eats through vessels, invade the blood stream, and can invade all organs
What are some complications of Miliary Tuberculosis?
- Pleural Effusion and Empyma
What is TB Pneumonia and what are the symptoms?
Liquified necrotic lesion into lung or lymp nodes
- Fever, Chllls, Productive cough, Pleuritic Pain, Leukocytosis (similar to bacterial pneumonia)
What would you find in a chest x-ray of someone with TB?
Is a Chest X-Ray alone sufficient enough to diagnose TB?
- Cavitation in UPPER LOBES
- Calcification
-Not possible
Where can you get a culture for TB from?
- Sputum
- Pus from Abscess
- Gastric Washing
- CSF
What is a side effect to drug therapy while treating TB?
Jaundice due to None-infectious hepatitis
Can a patient go home if TB culture is positive and if so under what conditions?
- They can go home if risks to others and household is already exposed an evaluated
-Need to submit monthly sputum culture until 2 consecutive negative tests
(This will declare the patient as not infectious)
What is Required to be done for a nurse discharging a TB patient?
- Notify Health Department
What are some signs and symptoms of Lung Cancer Paraneoplastic Syndrome?
- Hypercalcemia
- SIADH
- Adrenal Hypersecretion
- Polycythemia- blood cancer makes your body make too many RBCs
- Cushing Syndrome
What is something to not about lung cancer symptoms?
Similar symptoms to pneumonia but DOES NOT RESPOND TO TREATMENT
How do you perform Thoracentesis?
- Nurse positions patient with arms up and leaning over bedside table
- Nurse holds patient in place and talks them though it
- Provider sticks needle in pleural space and takes out fluid, but can’t remove too much (Watch BP)
- Patient will immediately feel Better

- Blockage of one or more pulmonary arteries by thrombus, fat, or air embolus or tumor tissue
- OBSTRUCTS ALVEOLAR PERFUSION
- Most commonly affects lower lobes
