Lower Respiratory Disorders Flashcards
Acute bronchitis
With viral upper respiratory infection or with COPD
- cough lasting 10-20 days
- T: antiinf, fluids, bronchodilators
Pertussis
Contagious infection of lower respiratory tract
- cough with whooping sound
- T: antibiotics and supportive care
Pulmonary fungal infection
Seriously I’ll patient being treated with corticosteroids, antineoplastic, immunosuppressives, multiple antibiotics
-not contagious
Lung abscess
Pus lesion of lung
- usually insidious
- antibiotics given
- M: cough producing purulent (dark brown), foul smelling and tasting
Pneumothorax
Puncture resulting in collapse -closed: spontaneous -open: stab or gunshot -tension: open or closed, rapid accumulation of air -hemothorax: blood T: chest tube and oxygen
Flail chest
Results from many rib fractures causing unstable chest wall
- T: airway management, ventilation, oxygen, IV
- reexpand the lung is goal
Chest tubes and pleural drainage
Remove air and fluid from pleural space
-most common complication: chest tube malposition
Pleural effusion
Collection of fluids in pleural space
- transudate: no inflammatory conditions; accumulations of protein poor, cell poor fluid
- exudative: accumulation of fluid and cells in an area of inflammation
- treat underlying cause
Pleurisy
Inflammation of pleura (pleuritis)
- cause: pneumonia, TB, chest trauma, pulmonary infractions, neoplasms
- T: underlying disease and pain relief
Atelectasis
Collapsed, airless alveoli
-cause: airway obstruction from retain secretions and exudates
Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
Scar tissue in connective of lungs as a sequel a to inflammation or irritation
-poor prognosis
Pulmonary edema treatment
MAD DOG
Meds: nipride and morphine
