Low-level Flashcards
Two types of ridge crossings
Perpendicular (45 degrees or less) is least tactically sound
If threat on other side, can’t turn around
Parallel (more than 45 degrees) allows easily transiting to either side of ridge
Perpendicular ridge crossing technique
2/3 terrain in window - top of terrain even with 4 - 5 degree indication in HUD or even with eye position indicator.
Lead with pwr as req’d, rotate to 7 - 12 FPV
After terrain passes top of horizon line, continue to climb 3 to 5 seconds, then level off. For 300 feet, set the API to 3° below horizon. Be level 1 mile prior to Crossing, API line should be on top of terrain.
However if the aircraft is half-mile from the ridge top with 3° API line the aircraft will clear the ridge by 150 feet.
