Low Carbon Materials Flashcards
What is Bioconcrete
Environmentally friendly alternative to trad concrete
Adds bacteria to concrete mix to reduce cement content
Self-healing properties
What’s added to bioconcrete?
Bacteria
1. Nutrients
2. Calcium ions
3. Microorganisms (precipitate calcium carbonate)
Advantages of Bioconcrete
- Superior durability (longer design life, good for bridges/tunnels/roads)
- Improved crack resistance
- CO2 neutral
- Reduced permeability (good for marine)
- sometimes higher strength
- Reduced design life cost
- Reduced maintenance costs
Disadvantages of Bioconcrete
- Higher cost (double)
- Low availability of bacteria
- Potential harm to human health
- Difficulty maintaining pH for bacteria to survive
- No definitive method of adding bacteria
- Microcapsules create planar weaknesses
- More research needed
What is Concrete Reinforced with Bamboo
Bamboo replaces steel, must be coated with bitumen/sand to prevent shrinking/swelling
Advantages of concrete reinforced with bamboo
- Renewable material (rapid regrowth post harvesting)
- Reduced CO2 consumption (low carbon)
- Light-weight (ease of constructability)
- Cheap for locals
- Simples & cheap harvesting process
- Readily available
Disadvantages of concrete reinforced with bamboo
- Not significantly cheaper than steel (transport, coating)
- Requires additional concrete to meet stability, load-bearing requirements
- Inconsistent tensile strength values
- Only good for lightweight structures
What is timber-concrete composite?
Timber beams & deck form bottom layer with concrete poured on top.
Dowels, rods, screws set into wood & surrounded by concrete are critical connections
compliments concrete’s compression & timber’s tensile resistances
Advantages of timber-concrete composite
- Reduce concrete use
- Timber has carbon sequestration (smaller carbon emissions)
- Enhanced thermal performance
- Good sound insulation
- Reduced self-weight
- Superior flexural behaviour
Disadvantages of timber-concrete composite
- Timber requires maintenance (moisture)
- Resource depletion of timber
- Lack of well-defined design guidlines & standards
- Timber’s susceptibility to moisture requires waterproofing & maintenance
What is geopolymers
use alkali to activate limestone materials and bind material together
precursor & chemical activator
precursor - aluminosilicate
activator - alkali&water (water glass)
Advantages of geopolymer
- Good fire resistance
- Good chemical resistance
- Good adhesion to surfaces e.g. for repairs
- Prevent reinforcement corrosion compared to Portland cement
- Low cost
- upcycling of industrial wastes
- Low CO2 emission footprint
Disadvantages to Geoploymers
- Requires sealed curing (for early age strength, to avoid cracking and evaporation)
- Quick setting
- Low very early-age strength (may need to leave more like 14 days than 1)
- handling difficulties
- Water glass (activator) has large carbon emissions, but v.small amount is used
Advantages of Recycled concrete aggregate
- Upcycles construction waste
Disadvantages of RCA
- Complex sorting and preparing aggregate process (extraction, crushing, screening)
- Rougher surfaces so more energy for mixing
- More porous
- may need more water for workability
- Low strength
