Lovell et al. Flashcards
Aim
To compare the effectiveness of CBT carried out face to face to CBT carried out by telephone in treating OCD.
Sample
72 P’s diagnosed w OCD
- Aged 16-65
- From 2 UK hospitals
- Scored at least 16 on YBOCS (not derived from substance abuse / other c.)
Design
P’s randomly allocated (independent m.):
- 10 weekly CBT sessions of 60 min face to face
- 10 weekly CBT sessions of 30 min telephone
Double-blind procedure (assessor’s unaware of P’ condition to avoid researcher bias)
Procedure
Assessed twice (4 weeks) prior treatment using YBOCS and BDI
Assessed again immediately after treatment + at 1, 3, 6 month follow ups
Given client satisfaction questionnaire
Results
Treatment was successful if YBOCS mean score decreased by 2 or more standard deviations:
- true for 77% telephone patients
- 67% of face to face patients
Scores on client satisfaction questionnaire showed P’s highly satisfied in both conditions.
Conclusion
P’s may benefit equally from CBT delivered over phone, even w reduced contact time.
