Aim
Case study that aims to investigate whether CBT with applied tension would be successful in treating BIIP.
Sample
42yo Hispanic male ‘T’ diagnosed w BIIP
interviews used to gather family info:
- witnessed multiple family deaths
- witness family faint during medical pro.
- lives with highly anxious grandma
- also diagnosed w severe depression / anxiety
Data collection
BDI (Becks depression inventory)
BAI (Becks anxiety index)
Q-LES-Q (quality of life satisfactory que.)
BIIS (blood injection symptom scale)
Procedure
9 CBT sessions w applied tension
T and therapist crated fear hierarchy
lowest to highest BII stimuli situations
worked through w relaxation techniques
SUDS scale to measure anxiety (0-100)
Results
T completed all stages w little anxiety
Last stage:
- collecting blood
- SUDS rating from 40 to 0
- with minimal AT
4, 10, 12 month follow-ups suggest:
- his anxiety decreased significantly
- he no longer feared medical related stimuli
Conclusion
CBT with AT is successful in treating BIIP
STRENGTHS
Validity: qualitative data for family info quantitative data- easily comparable
Ethics: right to withdraw, confidentiality
Applicability: broadens u/s
WEAKNESSES
Generalisability: case study so 1 P’ not generalisable to other people?? (42yo hispanic male)
Reliability: cannot easily replicate (1 P’)
Validity: self report - social desirability
