This is an affective, personal and durable attachment. It can refer to a wide range of feelings and relations.
Types of love
Eros- passion between sexual partners, distracting and spontaneous. Storge- family love, quiet everyday closeness.
Philia- love of friends, respect of ones character.
Agape- love for god or country.
Romantic love
This is an idealised attraction between persons, within an erotic context. Idealise the person you’re with, close supportive relationship. Falling in love is often disruptive.
One can tell if one is in love
They’re happier, optimistic and energetic.

Suggests that romantic love is present in almost all societies, however the extent to which romantic love determines social life is variable across cultures.
Euro- american societies
Regard romantic love as a necessary pre-condition for lifelong sexual partnerships.
Romantic love complex
Emerged in western Europe between the 15th and 18th Centuries, real changes to how people see their relationships. The industrial revolution alienated people, but meant that people met more people and became closer due to drastic changes in their lives. They relied on one another more.
Romantic love as part of capitalist individualism
Declining mortality rates between 1450 and 1750 allowed people to believe more strongly in lifelong attachment.
