He was a French general who became ruler in 1799 and dictator in 1804. He controlled much of Europe until he was defeated in the Battle of Waterloo 1815.
James Monroe

Was the 5th President and the last of the Founding Fathers to hold office. He was a diplomat and helped to negotiate the Louisiana Purchase. He went on to become secretary of state and secretary of war (1812).

Why did James Monroe negotiate for New Orleans and West Florida?
France and Spain had recently concluded a treaty to take back the land, which they had procured in 1682.
Thomas Jefferson was worried that France would be a greater threat as a neighbour.
He sent James Monroe to negotiate for New Orleans and West Florida for $10 million.
What happened when James Monroe showed up to negociate?
