Lorenz's Geese Study AO1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is imprinting?
A
when a bird attaches to and follows the first moving object they see
2
Q
Describe the procedure of Lorenz’s study.
A
- there were 2 groups of geese
- one (experimental group) hatched in an incubator infront of Lorenz
- one (control group) hatched in a normal setting infront of their mother
3
Q
Explain the results of the findings of Lorenz’ study.
A
- experimental group followed Lorenz
- control group followed mother
- this occured even when the baby geese were mxied up
- Lorenz suggested this was due to imprinting and this is a process that is irreversible and long lasting and must occur during the critical period
- imprinting could effect who they mate with in the future (will chose the same mate as what they imprinted on)
4
Q
How long is the critical period?
according to Lorenz
A
a few hours after hatching
