Longshore Drift Flashcards
How do the waves hit the beach
At an angle
Characteristics of rock that makes up the headland
Harder and more resistant to wave action e.g. basalt
Erosional landforms
Headland, cliff, wave cut platform, cave, arch and stack
Reference to place with cliffs
Cliffs of mohair in county Clare
Reference to wave cut platforms
Southern down
When is wave erosion greatest
When large waves break against the foot of the cliff
The waves undercut the foot of the cliff to form a wave cut notch. This is formed due to
Corrasion and hydraulic action and serves as a point of weakness
Over a period of time the notch enlarges until the cliff above it is
Left unsupported
3 things that will widen any weakness of a cliff
Corrasion, corrosion and hydraulic action
Reference to caves, arches and stacks
Old harry rocks in Dorset
Explain how stacks are formed
Stacks are formed by hydraulic action, solution and abrasion, these 3 process cause a crack to from on the cliff, the crack will get bigger and bigger and from a cave, the cave will eventually break through to the other side causing and arch. This arch will eventually collapse causing a stack which is separated from the cliff
