Longitude and Latitude Flashcards
What is latitude?
Latitude is the distance north or south from the equator.
How is latitude measured?
Latitude is measured in degrees.
What degree does the equator represent?
The 0° latitude
How are the lines of latitude numbered from both the North and South pole?
The lines of latitude are numbered from 0° to 90° at the equator from both the North and South pole.
True or False: Latitude lines run east/ west splitting the earth into the Northern and Southern Hemisphere.
True.
What is Longitude?
Longitude is measured East from the Prime Meridian and West from the Prime Meridian.
Where is the Prime Meridian located?
The Prime Meridian is located at 0°. It is neither east nor west.
True or False: Longitude lines splits the earth into the Western and Eastern Hemisphere.
True
If a place is located on the east of the prime meridian, what is it called?
An east longitude.
True or False: The y value is always stated first, followed then by the X value in a mathematical graph.
False, the x value is always stated first followed then by the y value.
What is the ‘origin’?
The ‘origin’ is the point where the 2 axes intersect with a value of (0,0).
A point can also have negative (-) values, where are these values found on a mathematical graph?
Negative x values are to the left of the origin (0,0) and negative y values are below the origin.
How is each degree of latitude and longitude divided?
Each degree is divided into 60 minutes, each minute is divided into 60 seconds.
How are latitude and longitude written?
Latitude is written first and must always include N or S of the equator.
Longitude is written next and must always include E or W of the prime meridian.
