Cabeza de Vaca

A

Headed an exploration off coast of Gulf of Mexico. Most of his men either drowned or started to death. Handful of surviors were rescued by Indians. As the men recuperated they came to admire the indian’s gentle ways. When De Vaca tried to tell this to heis superiors, his indian friends were ensalved and he and his men were sent back to spain

Francisco de Coronado

A

sent by the viceroy of the new spain to search for the mythical seven cities of gold in 1540. He and his men slaughtered adn terrorized hundreds of indians as they made their way as far as kansas. Many Spaniards died of thirst and hunger during the journed of Death across the desert. No cities of gold were found.

Don Juan de Onate

A

Claimed the New Mexico terriroty for Spain in 1598 and became the colony first governor. He demanded that the Indians become Christains and swear allegiance to the Spanish king. Those who refused were killed or tortured and enslaved. He founded San Juan and San Gabriel, but Indian rebellions led to his removal as governor and a new capital was founded at Sante Fe.

Pope

A

Led Pueblo Revolt in 1680, rebelling against oppression by the Spanish. The united INdian forces drove the Spaniards out of New Mexico territory. Pope helped reestablish the traditional religion and culture of the various Puelo tribes.

A

Spanish Solder and leader who reclaimed New Mexico twelve years after the Pueblo Revolt and became the terrotory’s new governor. By this time the Pueblo Coalition had falled apart due to warring among the tribesc, an dSante Fe surrendered without bloodshed
