adaptations Flashcards
Characteristics (traits) of a frog
Slimy Skin, lungs, and legs
Vertebrates
Animals with backbone
5 groups of vertebrates
Fish, Amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals
classify
to sort or group living things or objects according to their characteristics
invertebrates
Animals without a backbone
Inherited Traits
A phsysical characteristic that is passed down by parents or offspring
Acquired traits
A trait that you get during your lifetime
Instincts
The way a living thing acts or responds to their environment; that is inherited (not learned)
Learned Behavior
Something that you learn over your lifetime that you not born with
adaptations
A behavior or characterstic developed over time by a species in order to survive in their environment.
Natural selection
Process of adaptations being passed down over many generations
evolution
gradual change in a species ‘s inherited traits over many generations
How can groups animals by their shared characteristics help us
It helps us to know who the animal might be related to; what a plants ancestors might be- and if they were poisonous, and maybe to find a new species
What are some adaptations of animals that live in an underwater habitat
Webbed feet; stronger finds, a blowhole (to breathe) and bioluminescence
What is the different between an instinct and a learned behavior
Instints are heridtatary, they are inherited by offspring from their parents; learned behavior is something you learn throughout your lifetime.
Example of an animals learned behavior
Puppy follows mom to the food bowl
Example of animals inherited behavior- or instincts
Turtles follow the light of the moon to the water when they are born.
How are DNA, genes, and chromosomes related
They are in our blood and make us who we are; Chromosomes are packages of Genes and Genes are packages of DNA.
Chromosomes are the Books; Genes are the chapters, and DNA is the letters
Where do chromosomes come from
Chromosomes are from the nucleas of the cell; you get 23 from your mom and 23 from your dad. You have 46 chromosomes in each cell
Trait
Characteristics;
Inherited Traits
a physical characteristic that is passed down by parents to their babies or offsprings
offspring
another word for babies
the passing of traits
Heredity
Behavior
The way a living thing acts or responds to their environment
To acquire
To get
Acquired Physical Traits
Characteristics that are not passed down from parents to their offsprint
Traits moved from parents to their children through
Genes
Gene
Tiny part of a cell that contains traits
Genes contain
Instructions that control the growth of a plant or animal
What two groups have genes that control their size, shape, and color
birds, and plants
How many chromosomes do we have in each cell
46- 23 from each parent
Genes are found where
In our body’s chromosomes
DNA is made of how many main chemicals
4
What part of a cell is DNA found on
Chromosomes
Migration
A long journey to a new habitat
Physical adaptation
special body parts that help an animal survive
Why do animals hibernate
to save energy
endangered
animal that is in danger of disappearing forever
How long can adaptations take to develop
hundreds or thousands of years
