long term memory Flashcards
explicit memory
Involves memory that occurs when information can be consciously or intentionally retrieved or stated.
declarative memories
Decelerative memories, ‘knowing that’ –(semantic and episodic memory)
• Semantic memory- knowledge of facts and concepts about the world. This knowledge could include academic knowledge, rules, formulae and general knowledge. EG Canberra is the capitol of Australia.
• Episodic Memory- information about personal experiences and significant events . Includes details of the event and psychological and physiological state when the event occurred. I remember I had ice cream in Canberra.
Implicit memory
Implicit Memory
Involves memory that does not require conscious or intentional retrieval.
Procedural Memory
Procedural Memory
Learnt actions and skills that can be fully expressed- more related to action.
A second type of implicit memory is the effects of classical conditioning, which we learn without effort or awareness, to associate a NS with a CS to elicit a CR.
Difference between explicit and implicit memories
Explicit memory involves the intentional recall of information, whereas, implicit memory involves the unintentional recall of information.
