Define and give examples of long-term conditions

A
  • A condition for which there is currently no cure, and which is managed with drugs and other treatments
  • Examples: OA/RA, osteoporosis, stroke, diabetes, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, heart failure, Parkinson’s disease, dementia, COPD, Asthma, CF, depression

What is Prevalence? Describe the prevalence of long-term conditions in the population

A
  • Prevalence – number of people with eg. a LTC
  • LTCs are common (40% in UK) and their prevalence increases with age
  • Globally population is ageing which will therefore increase the number of people living with LTCs
