long term AO3 Flashcards

1
Q

one strength is that understanding types of LTM allows psychologists to help people with memory problems

A
  • e.g as people age they experience memory loss
  • becomes harder for people to recall memories of personal events that occurred recently though parts of the episodic memories remain intact
  • Sylvie Belleville et al 2006 devised an intervention to improve episodic memory in older people
  • trained ppts performed better on a test of episodic memory after training than a control group
  • shows that distinguishing between types of LTM enables specific treatments to be involved

Q

studying people with brain injuries helps researchers to understand how memory is normally meant to work

what are the limitations?

A
  • major limitation is they lack control of variables
  • brain injuries experienced by ppts were usually unexpected
  • cant control what happens before during or after injury
  • no knowledge of the memory before damage
  • difficult to judge how worse it is

A
  • episodic memory was severly impaired due to brain image
  • semantic memories unaffected
  • still understood the meaning of words
  • ## procedural memories were intact
