Long Bone Structure Flashcards
1
Q
Describe the diaphysis
A
The middle section / shaft of the bone
2
Q
Describe the epiphysis
A
The end points where joints form
3
Q
Describe the growth plate / epiphyseal plate
A
- situated between the diaphysis and epiphysis
- fused and inactive in adults
- where bone growth takes place in children and teenagers
4
Q
Describe compact bone
A
- forms the diaphysis
- dense and very strong
5
Q
Describe cancellous bone
A
- makes up the epiphysis
- honeycomb structure
- light but still strong
6
Q
Describe the periosteum
A
- forms a thin protective fibrous sheath around the bone but not over the ends
- rich supply of blood vessels which bring nutrients to the bone and transfer waste away
- also an attachment point for muscles and tendons
7
Q
Describe the job of the capillaries
A
To supply blood to the bone and all over the body
8
Q
Describe the bone cavity / medullary cavity
A
- runs down the middle of the shaft
- contains bone marrow where red and white blood cells are produced
9
Q
What are the eight main structures of a human long bone?
A
- diaphysis
- epiphysis
- growth plate / epiphyseal plate
- compact bone
- cancellous bone
- periosteum
- capillaries
- bone cavity / medullary cavity
