Long Bone Flashcards
Exam 1
Long Bones are
longer then they are wide
Long bones are found in
extremeties, phalanges (finger bones), femur, humerus (upper arm)
Articular cartilage
made of hyaline cartilage → helps with lubrication in joints
epiphyseal
growth plate, becomes epiphyseal line after maturing, made of hyaline cartilage
at end of long bone
diaphysis
shaft of bone
has the medullary cavity (with yellow bone marrow)
periosteum
wraps entire bone
made of dense irregular CT
“peri” means outer
endosteum
wraps medullary cavity
“endo” means inner
Spongy bone
has trabeculae (inner texture)
in inner parts of bone
Compact bone
no trabeculae, more dense, Hematopoiesis (blood cell formation), Storage of lipids and minerals (calcium and phosphorous)
in outer parts of bone
medullary cavity
within diaphysis
store and produce bone marrow
yellow bone marrow
soft tissue in medullary cavity composed of fat cells and mesenchymal stem cells
Perforating (sharpey’s) fibers
bundles of collagen that connect the periosteum to bone
