Integumentary System Flashcards
Describe two integumentary system mechanisms that help regulate body temperature.
eccrine sweat glands –> sweat evaporating absorbs heat fom body –> cools off body
Vasodilation –> blood vessels expand when body is too hot, inc. blood flow to skin’s surface
- allows more heat to dissipate into the surface
- vasoconstriction is opposite, blood flow is limited to maintain core temp. and reduce heat dissipation
Pacinian corpuscle
deep touch receptor in reticular layer
papillary layer of dermis
superior layer
made of areolar CT
reticular layer of dermis
dense irregular CT
Stratum corneum
All cells (keratinocytes) are dead
Waterproof, strong
superficial
Stratum lucidum
Contains flattened, dead keratinocytes
In thick skin (palms of feet or hands)
Stratum granulosum
lamellar granules and keratohyalin granules
1-5 layers of flattened cells
Starting to die
Waterproof and keratinization of cells
Stratum spinosum
Tonofilaments (pre-keratin)
Living cells
Stratum basale
Completely living Melanocytes and tactile epithelial (merkel cells)
Melanin (skin color)
Light touch receptors
Deepest stratum
