Loneliness Flashcards
Types of loneliness
Momentary loneliness (adaptive and prompts seeking social connection) or chronic (maladaptive and undermines social connections)
Loneliness, happiness and facebook
332 facebook users, found that number of facebook friends positively correlated with happiness and negatively correlated with loneliness and facebook persistence (desire to check facebook) is associated with higher levels of loneliness
Engagement intervention study
Uni students using facebook completed a 1 week intervention where they were told to post more updates on facebook or received information on typical posting rates. Found that posts increased by 8 posts for intervention group and that the intervention group noted significant reductions in loneliness (irrespective of likes or comments received)
Expresser (stereotype)
Interview video emphasises the different positive contributions of minority groups that enrich campus life and the positive stereotype decreases likeability and qualification but increases bias
Latent negative stereotype theory
Expressing positive stereotypes signals that one holds latent negative group-based beliefs as well
Gender stereotype
Had people walking to class and getting handed a flyer asking for volunteers at children’s hospital and being told women are very nurturing which increases negative stereotype, sexist ratings and depersonalisation.
Ethnicity stereotype
Individuals were at a local cafe studying for a math final and approached by a classmate asking for help and saying Asians are good at math. This increased negative stereotypes, racist ratings and depersonalisation
Ethnicity comparison stereotype
A live interaction between a participant and confederate. Categorisation condition (I’m white and you’re Asian) or positive stereotype condition (I know Asians are good at math, you do the math questions and I’ll do the others). Increased negative stereotypes, racist ratings and depersonalisation
