  • Classic triad of cortex: spongiform vacuolation, loss of neurons, astrocyte cell proliferation
  • EEG abnormalities present in almost all patients, though are not specific: slow and irregular background rhythm, periodic complex discharges
  • CT and MRI: diffuse cortical atrophy
  • PET: heterogeneously decreased uptake throughout the cortex.
