what was London’s population in 1900s and how and why did it change?

A
  • It declined from 8.6 million in 1939 to 6.8 million in 1981 because of east end counter urbanisation, industrialisation and closure of docks which where out competed by new container ports.
  • By the early 1980 huge parts of London were in decline with male unemployment as high as 60% in some areas..

  • It was property led regeneration
  • established a secondary financial district with the heart of it being canary wharf which at the time was the tallest building in the UK.
  • Improved transport infrastructure including the docklands light railway and City airport

  • Instead of property led regeneration it worked alongside existing organisations such as the majors London development agency. With the main focus community regeneration and sustainability.
  • 10500 homes were built with 35% being affordable
  • 5000 jobs created
  • 1.35 billion in private sector investment
  • 225000 of commercial floor space and nearly 15000 of new education space

  • It created a opportunity to continue to transform west students. The secretary said it would be the greenest and most sustainable Olympics in history.
