History
Loss of jobs in the area - due to containerisation and decline in shipping industry.
During the 1950s housing was built in the area - to replace damaged homes from WW2 - associated with high levels of deprivation and crime - unemployment in the 70s was 24% - inadequate transport links - meant people didn’t invest in the area.
Regeneration
50,000 new homes built since 1981 - building of Silvertown urban village - £20 million was spent on environment and community projects - the Docklands Light railway opened - London City airport opened 1987 - £300 million spent on improving utilities.
Key players
London Dockland Development Corporation - attracted investment into the area.
HSBC - re-imaging of the area.
TFL and Crossrail - implemented the DLR - new transport hub through the creation of the Elizabeth line - Canary Wharf stop.
