A

Structure Hopelessness & Anger
-relentless image of deprived people.
-first 2 stanzas focus on people he sees and hears.
-third stanza shifts to institutions he holds responsible —-final stanza is on people showing how new born is affected
Hopelessness
‘mind-forged manacles’ suggest the people themselves are also to blame, they’re trapped by their own attitudes. they appear hopeless cuz they’re not able or even trying to help themselves

Anger
‘every black’ning church appals’ ‘hapless soldiers sigh runs in blood down palace walls’ suggest how angry at people in power, who could do something to change things but don’t

A

poem includes depressing sight and sounds of city.

  • first stanza is about what he sees
  • second what he hears
  • last two stanzas combined visual and aural
  • ‘In every cry of every man in every infant cry of fear in every voice, in every ban, emphasise on bleakness. speaker hears distressing noises making this seem like hellish experience

-‘blast the newborn infant tears’ the innocence of newborn babies is lost immediately, society damages its members
