London Flashcards
“Chartered”
They are effectively owned by the wealthy - power and unfairness
“In every infants cry of fear”
Significant because children are supposedly born innocent and shouldnt have to suffer
The phrase incites sympathy in the reader amd also shows pessimistically how every life is DESTINED for MISERY - unfairness
“Mind forged manacles”
Internal oppression amd weakness, also culmination of the suffering experienced in the preceding lines
Shows power controlling over powerless
“Blackning church”
Seen as strancge since churches are usually a place of worship. However calling it blackning shows a criticism of organised religion, and its failure to provide for the disadvantaged members of society
Structure
Cyclical structure - suggests suffering is never ending
Regular rhyme scheme - shows total control and oppression
” in every”
Anafora - which is repeated 7 times in total throughout the poem which emphasises the extreme extant of the suffering
