Logical Fallacy Flashcards
Fallacy
Error in reasoning
Ad Hominem
Personal attacks of the opponent rather than logical arguments related to the topic under discussion as if they support their claims
Straw Man
Someone attacks a position their opponent doesn’t really hold instead of their actually argument, making it into one that is easier to critique
Appeal to Ignorance
when people use the fact that “nobody knows” something, or has never proven it, as main support for the arguments
False Dilemma
Limiting the options to 2 options when there are actually more options
Slippery Slope
Moving a seemingly harmless starting point and working through a number of small steps to an improbable extreme
Circular Reasoning
When a person’s argument is the same as their original argument without presenting any new evidence
Hasty Generalization
General statements made without sufficient evidence to support them
Red Herring
Distraction from the argument with a sentimental that appears to be relevant but is actually off-topic
Appeal to Hypocrisy
Distract from the point by pointing out the hypocrisy in your opponent.
Post Hoc
Mistake something as a cause just because it happened first
Bandwagon
Doing something because many other people have done it
