Logical Behaviourism Flashcards
Who recalibrated psychology into a science of behavior?
What is the core of psychological behaviourism?
John Watson (1878 - 1958)
The soul, the mind, consciousness and all related notions were considered unscientific and banned from further scrutiny.
What is introspection as a scientific method?
What is the most serious problem of introspection as a scientific method?
Subjects are asked to “look inward” and report on their subjective experiences as accurately as possible.
Introspective reports can never be verified or falsified by others. This makes it impossible to aquire objectively valid scientific knowledge.
What dilemma arises with psychological behaviorism?
Either our mentalistic language, which is an integral part of every day life and our society including legal and moral systems, is build on non-scientific assumptions or our scientific worldview is principally incomplete.
What is the para-mechanical hypothesis?
The difference between intelligent and non-intelligent behaviour is determined by their causal origin.
Intelligent behaviour is caused by the mind while non-intelligent behaviour is a bodily affair.
The mind controlls behaviour but the behaviour is not part of the mind.
What is a disposition?
How does this concept fit in the para-mechanical hypothesis?
A specific tendency to display a specific behaviour under specific circumstances.

What is mental holism?
Why is it a problem for logical behaviorism?
