Simple analgesics
mild to moderate pain, pyrexia
Opioid analgesics
Severe visceral pain (MI, post op)
NSAIDs
pain related to tissue injury, pain related to inflammation, pyrexia
Drugs for neuropathic pain
Neuropathic pain, epilepsy
Anti-migraine
Migraines
Nitrates
Angina pectoris, heart failure
Local anaesthetics (-caine)
many, admin can be deep injection, subcutaneous or topical
Local anaesthetics plus adrenaline
LA cause vessel dilation = increased blood flow so quick rate of absorption and short effect. Give with adrenaline to counteract
Corticosteroids
inflammatory diseases eg asthma, COPD, RA, SLE, IBD. Allergic emergencies
Methotrexate DMARD
rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, malignancy
Sulfasalazine
RA, IBD, Crohn’s
Cytokine inhibitor
sever acute RA, treated with at least 2 DMARDS (inc methotrexate), active disease
Glycosaminoglycan anticoagulant
thromboembolism, DVT/PE, thromboprophylaxis in high risk hospital patients
Bisphosphates
post-menopausal osteoporosis, preventative for OP, Paget’s disease, malignant bone metastases
Oestrogen/ HRT
menopausal symptoms, osteoporosis treatment where other therapies are contraindicated, prophylaxis of post-menopausal OP
