The transformation to English state from absolute monarchy (charles 1) to constitutional monarchy (charles 11)

Fiscal crisis and need to raise funds , did this through taxation

In 1627 where if someone refused to pay up they could be imprisoned wihtout trail .
What did Locke believe in ?
The principle of the rule of law and of equality before the law . He argues against the state of war and believes human are ‘sociable’ and capable of self-restraint .
What does Locke believe about natural law?
Is timeless and universal and has priority over civil law
What does Locke belive about human beings ?
They are rational and able to comprehend the requirement of the law. Believe they have natural rights which others have a duty to respect even in the state of nature and the sovereign has a right to protect these civil laws .
What does lock say about resistance ?
There is a ‘right to resistance’ in certain circumstances when a sovereign commits act forbidden by the law of nature (theft_ or betrays his trust

The idea that the concept of liberty involves being able to do as we please without interference

Belief that law creates and sustains liberty rather then diminished it

Republicanism but did not self-identify as a liberal thinker but a “whig” not a “tory”

Classical liberalism before its transformation into liberal democracy
What is Lockes view on natural law ?
Protects the private sphere where individuals should be left at liberty to do what they will with their own person and property.
What is Lock’s view on natural rights ?
They should ought not be interfere with and if the soverign interferes they may be rebelled against and resisted.
