Q

Brain scan evidence of localisation of functions in the brain

A

Brain scans show areas highlight when participants carry out certain task

E.g wernickes areas is highlighted when patient is listening

Q

Phineas Gage

A

Pole through head
Left frontal lobe penetrated
He had a change of personality, he developed a temper which he had never had before
Supports that something in the left frontal lobe is responsible for personality
This supports localisation as this is a specific function changed when a part of the brain is impaired

Q

OCD AND DEPRESSION support

A

Dougherty (02)
44 OCD patients undergone cingulotomy- lesioning if cingulate gyrus
1/3 successful response
14% partial response
Support that symptoms and behaviour associated with mental disorders are localised

Q

Plasticity- disputes theory

A

When the brain becomes damaged, particular functions can be reorganised and carried out in an alternative area of the brain therefore the same neurological action an be achieved. This has been seen in several stroke victims and limits the localisation theory as it demonstrates several parts of the brain carrying out the same function
