LOCAL ANESTHETIC BLOCK Flashcards
these are performed at the base of the toe just distal to the Interdigital space. This area is distal to the flare at the base of the proximal phalanx and provides a fleshy area to insert the needle.
digital blocks
The area just distal to the interdigital space dorsally is cleansed with alcohol. A 3cc syringe with an appropriate needle 1” to 1 ½” long is inserted at the middle of the toe over the extensor tendon and angled towards the medial side of the toe.
Lesser Digital Block
used at the dorsal and medial aspect of the hallux just distal to the interdigital space is cleansed with alcohol.
Hallux Block – The H block
Corticosteroid injection effectively provides pain relief, although it carries the risk of plantar fascia rupture and fat pad atrophy.
plantar fasciitis injection
The interdigital spaces of the foot are sites for the occurrence of painful neuromas, a condition termed Morton’s neuroma.
how are these treated?
neuroma injection
The sinus tarsi is an anatomic space between the inferior neck of the talus and the superior aspect of the distal calcaneus.
how is this treated?
sinus tarsi injection
this technique is utilized for the 1st or 5th metatarsals to anesthetize from approximately mid-shaft distally.
nerves used?
mayo block
- Medial dorsal cutaneous nerve
- Deep peroneal nerve
- Saphenous nerve
- Medial plantar nerve
a modified “ring block” of the ankle. Five nerves are targeted; superficial peroneal, deep peroneal, saphenous, sural and posterior tibial nerves.
ankle block
a commonly blocked nerve in the lower extremity.
nerves included?
The Posterior tibial nerve
- Posterior tibial nerve
- Saphenous nerve
- Deep peroneal nerve
- Superficial peroneal nerve
- Sural nerve
