Load transport Flashcards
load transport
traction, saltation, suspension and solution
Load
amount of sediment transported by a river
3 subgroups
bedload= pebbles
suspended load = smallest particles carried along in suspension
solution load = material dissolved in solution
traction
process of transporting coarse bedload
rocks and pebbles more intermittently by sliding
intermittent because of uneveness in the channel such as turbulent flow + frictional resistance of the bed
only occurs when river energy levels are high
saltation
skipping/ bouncing motion of sand sized particles
leapfrog each other
momentum idea = many saind grains begin to move as soon as some are in motion
suspension
applies to the smallest particles - silt and clay
high velocities are required although once in suspension they can travel long distances
solution
solution
streams draining areas of dissolvable minerals
most effective in humid tropical environments
takes place at frequent intervals
