Unauthorised Access to data
-any time data is seen or used by those who should not see or use it
- espionage = gaining advantage over original data holder
-poor information security policy = leads to less secure data
Accidental loss of data
-human error = deleting files or discarding paperwork
-technical/equipment fault = backups essential
-loss of personal data is an infringement of DPA
Intentional destruction of data
-computer virus= malicious software code that can reproduce itself and destroy or infect data files or programs
-hacker=targeted attack,
-electromagnetically wiping data from storage device
-physical destruction of storage device
-burning or shredding physical data
Intentional tampering with data
-data changed in some way - fraudulent activity
-hacking =accessing data illegally and making changes
- decisions made on changed data would be flawed
-negative impact = organisation seen as having poor data security
