What is the Practice Standards Scheme (PSS)?
PSS is a voluntary initiative to accredit veterinary practices in the UK
Why is PSS imortant?
Through setting standards and carrying out regular assessments
It aims to promote highest standards of veterinary care.
What legal obligations must veterinary practice premises (VPP) in the UK fulfill to operate?
Veterinary practice premises must be registered to allow veterinary surgeons to supply medicines from them.
Why must all veterinary practice premises (VPP) be registered in the UK?
To enable veterinary surgeons to supply medicines from the premises.
What happens if a veterinary practice premises (VPP) is part of the Practice Standards Scheme (PSS)?
The medicines inspection will be part of the whole practice assessment carried out by the PSS assessor.
How often does the VMD inspect non-PSS veterinary practice premises (VPP)?
at least once every 4 years
What are the requirements for a veterinary surgeon to become a PSS assessor?
They must be at least 5 years qualified as an MRCVS, be in active veterinary practice (or have been in the last 3 years), and have suitable experience in the relevant species area.
What training do PSS assessors receive?
PSS assessors undergo initial and ongoing training to ensure high and consistent standards of assessment, support, and communication.
What is a Training Practice (TP)
A veterinary practice which meets RCVS standards for the approval of training Practices
What is an approved TP role?
Provide training for student veterinary nurses, both in vocational training and clinical experience
Why is it important that student nurses only train in registered TP’s?
These agreed standards ensure VN’s are trained to a consistent level of knowledge
They are competent to enter RCVS to practice resonsibility in clinical and non-clincal settings
What are the requirements for designated dispensing facilities at training practices (TP)?
TP’s must have well-managed dispensing facilities, including proper stock control, rotation, and storage in line with Veterinary Medicines Regulations.
What competency must veterinary nurses have regarding medication dispensing?
Veterinary nurses must have the skills to dispense medications correctly and responsibly, following relevant legislation
