What is a incident?
Event that causes harm, damage or loss to a person, people or environment
What is a emergency?
serious unexpected event that requires immediate action to be taken
What is a accident?
unexpected event that causes injury, damage or loss
List some examples of incidents and emergencies?
- accidents
- intruders
- aggressive and dangerous encounters
- fire and floods
- loss of water supply
- power cut
- bomb threat
What is First Aid?
This is providing immediate treatment to an individual to preserve life. May be the only intervention required depending on the situation or is offered until the emergency services arrive and take over with a serious incident.
What is First Aid? (2nd Definition)
First Aid is support given to an individual who is injured until the person reaches a hospital or place where they will receive full medical help.
List some responsibilities of First Aiders?
-Assessing the area where the incident has occurred for danger,
as you do not need more than one person needing intervention or help.
-DRAB is the acronym used – Danger, Response, Airway,
breathing – this is used to assess
an unconscious patient.
-Prevention of further harm – by
intervening you are not making
things worse
-Maintaining the individuals dignity and treating them with respect.
-Getting assistance/help
-Staying with the individual until help arrives
-Providing initial care. Eg. CPR, controlling bleeding, dealing with choking etc to try and stabilise the individual’s condition.
What does ABC stand for which a first aider must check?
Airway, breathing, circulation.
What do the 3 P’s stand for which are the responsibilities of the first aider?
-Preserve life
-Prevent further injury
-Promote recovery
What is the role of a first aider (detailed)
-Assess: the situation quickly and calmly- check whether you or the casualty are in any danger. Is it safe to approach them? Scene: find out what caused the accident or situation if possible. Situation: find out what’s happened.
-Protect yourself and them from any danger. Always protect yourself first, never put yourself at risk. Only move them if leaving them would cause more harm. —Call 999 for emergency help if required.
-Prevent infection between you and them. Wash your hands with soap or water. Wear disposable gloves. —Do not touch an open wound without gloves on.
-Do not breathe, cough or sneeze over a wound or casualty.
-Comfort and reassure- stay calm and take charge over the situation. Introduce yourself to them to gain their trust. Explain the situation and anything you’re going to do before it.
-Treat the casualty with dignity and respect at all times.
-Assess the casualty and give first aid treatment.
-Arrange for help if needed. Call 999 if you think the situation is serious.
What are other duties of a first aider?
-Keeping your first aid skills up to date. First Aid certificates are valid for 3 years after that the person should do the first aid course again.
-Being aware of risks and hazards in the surroundings.
-Be familiar with first aid equipment. Ensure you know where to find the equipment and how to use it, get training if unsure how to use equipment.
List some responses to accidents and emergencies?
*Reporting of accidents e.g. to senior staff or in a book
* Evacuation procedures
* Follow-up review of critical incidents and emergencies
* Report to relevant authorities e.g. RIDDOR, social services, the police or HSE
What are first aid requirements for employers?
- carry out risk assessments to identify the level of first aid provision required.
- provide appropriate first aid equipment and facilities
- train and appoint staff to give first aid should employees fall ill at work or injured.
- have an effective means of recording accidents or incidents that require first aid intervention.
- provide a adequate number of first aiders.
What is the HSE?
Health and safety executive.
How should a individual respond to aggressive and dangerous encounters and unauthorised access?
- be calm
- speaking firmly and clearly- ask them to leave if possible?
- alerting other staff
- keeping service users/ residents/ children away from the incident.
- calling the police if they refuse to leave.
- keeping yourself safe do not put yourself at risk.
