What is the APGAR score used for?
Whether baby needs medical assistance.
To assess how well the baby is doing outside the womb.
How would they treat pre-term babies for bacterial infections?
Antibiotics
What will a baby who scores 0-2 with severe asphyxia (lack of oxygen) need?
To be resuscitated.
What are salmon patches(stork marks)?
Red or pink patches on the neck, forehead, eyelids at birth.
Can fade after a few months, some remain up to 4 years or longer.
What score on average does a ‘healthy baby’ score on the APGAR scale?
9
What is the APGAR score out of?
10
When is the APGAR score assessed?
One minute after birth.
Five minutes after birth
Every five minutes after birth if there is a problem.
What does the APGAR score test on a newborn baby?
Heartbeat.
Muscle/tone.
Breathing/reflex response.
What do premature babies need for them to become healthy.
IV line into veins if the baby is to weak to feed on its own.
Vitamins and mineral supplements.
Special formulae milk/breastfeeding.
What are infantile haemangiomas (strawberry marks)?
Raised red marks.
Can appear anywhere on the body, which grow in the first six months, shrinking by the ages of 7.
What are babies lungs filled with which is then absorbed during birth and labour?
Fluid
What are mongolia spots?
Blue patches of darker pigment.
Mainly found of the bottom of black skin which then usually dissapear by the age of 4.
What causes ‘tongue tie’ in babies and do they need major surgery?
They don’t need surgery just a small procedure.
The tongue is anchored to the bottom of the mouth by apiece of skin that is too tight.
How do you test the startle reflex?
If the baby hears a loud noise they will clench their fists and their arms will stiffen away from their body.
