Participation increases, role models created, grass roots, profile of certain sports raised (such as women’s football, athletics)

Investments in infrastructure, can be used by the locals after the event, new jobs created, increase in tourism to area, increase in participation.

Increase in morale for country
Raises the status of the country - wants to look good to the rest of the world.
Increase in tourism.
New/improved facilities built for event - used after the event.
Better transport systems are created.
Increased commercialism - more money from sponsors.
Drawbacks of hosting a major sporting event?
Bidding can be extremely expensive - can cost more to host than generate.
If event is poorly organised, infrastructures and facilities may be abandoned.
Negative impact on country if the event runs poorly.
