LO3 Flashcards
What shearing forces and bending moments might occur in a ship’s
structure in still water?
A ship will experience shearing forces and bending moments as a
consequence of uneven distribution of weight forces and
buoyancy forces acting along its length.
What shearing forces and bending moments might occur in a ship’s
structure when at sea?
the ship will bend like a beam. It may be considered as an H-girder with deck and bottom shell plating forming the flanges. this is when hogging and sagging are more likely to occur.
For a modern container ship, describe how torsional stresses might arise when floating in still water?
The loading of weights in forward port holds and starboard aft holds or vice-versa in still water.
For a modern container ship, describe how torsional stresses might arise when floating in sea water?
The oblique approach of waves at sea causing cyclical torsion stresses to port and starboard as the waves pass the ship.
