When talking about development, what does PECS stand for?
P = physical development E = emotional development C = cognitive development S = social development
What is physical development?
The development of the body, such as how it gradually increases in size and also the physical skills that involve body movements
What is emotional development?
The development and expression of feelings. Learning how to manage emotions and displaying them appropriately
What is attachment?
The emotional bond that develops between a child and their caregivers or between to adults in an intimate relationship
What is cognitive development?
The development of the mind. Includes skills such as learning to talk, understanding, memory, concentration, reasoning, problem solving and following instructions
What is social development?
Growth of relationships with others. Learning the skills and attitudes that enable individuals to live easily and comfortably with other members of the community.

Larger movements of the legs, arms, feet or whole body

Smaller movements such as those required to grasp a pen or hold a paintbrush
What is holistic development?
Refers to how the child or adult develops as a whole being. All aspects of development are happening at the same time and do not occur in isolation. You often need a physical skill to be able to access emotional and cognitive skills
What does the word “norm” mean when talking about development?
The age at which a person should achieve a particular development milestone
What does the word “milestone” mean when talking about development?
A significant stage or event in the development of something.
What is self image?
Self image is the mental picture we have of ourselves. Some people see themselves in a positive light, for example, intelligent, attractive and talented, whereas some people may see only negatives in themselves.
What is self esteem?
Self-esteem is about how much you like and accept yourself- this is often talked about in terms of how much you value yourself.
What is security?
Feeling safe. Trusting others to look after you
What is socialisation?
This is when we learn the norm, values and behaviour that makes us part of a particular group. We learn these from the people around us and what we see
What is oestrogen?
The female development hormone. Responsible for the physical changes in puberty
What is testosterone?
The male development hormone. Responsible for the physical changes in puberty
