What is antenatal care?
The care you get as soon as you become pregnant until birth
What foods should you eat when pregnant?
Foods or supplements high in Vitamin B12 (Folic Acid)
Which foods should you avoid when pregnant?
Unpasteurised cheese
Soft blue cheese
Raw or partly cooked eggs
Shellfish

What is a breech birth?
When a woman doesn’t have enough amniotic fluid the baby can’t move into head first position and ends up being feet first
What is a caesarean section?
Surgical procedure by which the baby is born through an incision in the abdomen
What is a miscarriage
Unborn baby dies in before 24th week of pregnancy
What is a still born
Baby dies after 24 weeks of pregnancy
What is an ectopic pregnancy?
When an embryo starts to grow in fallopian tube instead of womb
What is conception?
When the egg is fertilised by the sperm
What is pre-conception health?
Changing lifestyle before you get pregnant to give you best chance of conceiving
What is a zygote?
Cell formed by sperm and egg combining. Fits 8 weeks
What is a foetus?
Embryo from 8 weeks - birth
What is shoulder dystocia?
When the bay’s head has been born but one of the shoulders becomes stuck in the mother’s pelvis
What are the stages of labour?
Waters break Contractions start Cervix opens Baby moves through birth canal Afterbirth
What is premature birth?
When a baby is born before 37 weeks
What are the effects of premature birth?
Less developed immune system
Need help feeding
Need support to breathe and to keep warm
Long term problems - behaviour issues
What is foetal alcohol syndrome?
If the mother drinks during pregnancy, baby can have a smaller head, be smaller in size, have heart defects and learning difficulties
What happens if you smoke during pregnancy?
Premature labour
Miscarriage
Cleft palate
Weakened immune system
