LO2 - Question 2 - Heat Transfer And Heatsinks Flashcards
How does heat transfer?
It transfers through 3 mechanisms:
- Radiation
- Conduction
- Convection
What is conduction?
The heat is transferred by the vibratory motion of atoms or molecules.
What is convection?
The heat is transferred by mass movement of fluid. It could be natural convection (without a fan) or forced convection (with a fan).
How to draw a heat sink?
Start by drawing a small rectangle called the junction, then draw a larger rectangle called the metal plate exactly under it, then draw the PCB which is also a larger rectangle exactly under the metal plate. Finally, draw a large E with 5 sections horizontally on the junction named the heat sink.
How does heat transfer with a heat sink?
The component dissipates heat onto the heatsink and the pcb. Both the heat sink and PCB will dissipate the heat on more surface-area and therefore it is easier to dissipate heat with a heatsink.
