Define prejudice
This is a negative attitude or dislike of an individual or group, often based on ill-informed personal opinion about one of the aspects such as race, culture, sexual orientation etc.
Define direct discrimination
This involves intentionally putting them at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on their differences
Define indirect discrimination
When a policy, practice or rule applies to everybody but has a detrimental effect on or disadvantages a particular group
State some differences that individuals can be discrimated against for :
- sexual orientation
- gender
- age
- social class
- disability
- culture
- race
Define abuse
This refers to a negative and harmful way of behaving toward, another individual or a certain group of people. Examples of forms of abuse are physical, emotional, sexual, financial or verbal abuse, or bullying or socially excluding someone.
Define labelling
This is a negative approach that identifies people as members of a particular group, with the assumption that they are “all the same”.
Define bullying
This involves threatening, intimidating, humiliating or frightening others; it is repeated behaviour intended to physically or psychologically hurt. Bullying is more likely to occur in situations where someone is in a position of power, such as a manager, or when an individual is dependent on a care worker or relative.
How can discriminatory practices impact individuals?
- disempowerment
- low self esteem and confidence
- poor health and well-being
- unfair treatment
- negative effects on mental health
State the difference between indirect and direct discrimination :
Direct discrimination is intentional, such as calling someone racist names. Indirect discrimination may be unintended or accidental. A job advert that stated men must be clean shaven would be indirect religious discrimination.
