What is the definition of equality?
Equality means to ensure that a person is treated fairly, and provided the same opportunities regardless of their differences and treated accordingly to their individual needs.
What is the definition of diversity?
Diversity encompasses recognising and respecting individuals differences such as differences in faith, beliefs and race.
What are the 6 rights?
Choice, confidentiality, protection from harm and abuse, equal and fair treatment, consultation and right to life.
Define the right choice.
Choice gives the individual control of their lives and increases self-esteem as it promotes independence ad empowerment.
Define the right confidentiality.
Confidentiality means that private information should only be shared with individuals who are directly involved within a persons care (need-to-know-basis)
Define the right protection from harm and abuse.
Care settings and practitioners should enforce safeguarding procedures and safety measures in place and should follow health and safety legislation.
Define the right equal and fair treatment.
Individuals working in or using health, social or child care services should be treated within the law and according to heir individual needs.
Define the right consultation.
Consultation is individuals using health, social or child care services should be asked for heir opinions and views about their care and treatment ; this should inform the care they receive.
Define the right right to life.
An individual’s life is protected by the humans right law ; everyone’s right to life should be valued and respected.
What are values of care?
They are core principles that underpin the work of those providing health, social or child care services. They are a set of guidelines and ways of working for care settings and their staff.
What are the 3 values of care?
Promoting equality and diversity
Promoting individuals rights and beliefs
Maintaining confidentiality
Examples of applying promoting equality and diversity :
Equality :
- access to care services provided for everyone : wheelchair ramps, leafless provided in a range of formats
- staff using non-discriminatory language
- care settings having and following an equal opportunities policy
Diversity :
- offering choice eg : menus with range of options catering for needs such as vegetarian, diabetic, gluten
- individuals offered a range of different activities and outings to participate in
Examples of promising individuals rights and beliefs
Rights :
- mobility, dietary and communication needs met
- ensuring all areas and resources in a setting are accessible
- female staff if cultural requirements need to be met
- consulting
Beliefs :
- prayer room provided
- celebrating range of different festivals : Chinese new year, Eid, Hanukkah
- cultural and religious dietary requirements met : halal and kosher
Examples of maintaining confidentiality
- information only shared on a need to know basis
- patients records kept securely in a locked filing cabinet
- password protected computers of patients records to limit access to authorised staff only
