LO1 - The Cardiovascular System Flashcards
What are the two types of cholesterol ?
HDL’s - GOOD
LDL’s - BAD
What cell prevents infections ? - name all three
White blood cell’s
- lymphocytes
- neutrophils
- monocytes
Arteries
Takes blood away from the heart
Veins
Takes blood into the heart
Pulmonary artery
Takes blood out your heart to the lungs
Pulmonary veins
Brings blood from the lungs to the heart
Vena cava
Deoxygenated blood from the body’s organs returns to the heart in this main vein
Atrio-ventricular valves
Only open in one direction to make sure a one way system is created so then blood always moves forward from the atria to the ventricles preventing back-flow
Semi-lunar valves
Only open one direction to make sure a one way system is created so that blood always moves forward and is carried away from the heart preventing back-flow
Purkyne fibres
Carry the current down the middle of the ventricles to the Apex of the heart
The process of an ECG ?
P- Atrium contracting (SAN)
Q- slight delay (AVN)
R- ventricles contract (Pukryne fibres)
S- ventricles relax push blood out of the heart via arteries
T- atrium will start to refill with blood. New cycle beginning
Hydrostatic pressure
Causes by your heart contracting > forces plasma out of the capillaries (diffusion) > capillaries > tissue fluid (cells) - urea, glucose, plasma
Oedema
Build up of tissue fluid, skin swollen
- indication that they have a heart problem
