- carbon monoxide gas from smoke
- high blood pressure of the person
- both causes damage to endothelium
- white blood cells repair this damage
- and encourage the growth of smooth muscle
- and fatty deposits, like cholesterol, under the endothelium
- This is called atherosclerosis
