Define a hazard
Anything that can cause harm
Example of an environmental hazard
Trips, slips, due to crowded areas or frayed carpets
Examples of biological hazards
Bodily fluids, waste not disposed of > e.g, vomit or soiled nappies or laundry on the floor
Examples of chemical hazards
Cleaning products, > unlabelled
storage of medicines > unlocked medicine trolley
What are the types of hazards to be aware of in a health, social and child care settings?
Environmental, biological, chemical, physical, musculoskeletal, working practices, working conditions, lack of security systems
Examples of physical hazards
Stress and fatigue due to long working hours
Coping with challenging behaviour, violence or abuse from service users
Examples of musculoskeletal hazards
Manual handling of equipment, patients or residents > can cause back injuries
Display screen equipment (DSE) > can cause muscular pains and aches
Examples of working conditions
Temperature, confined spaces, noise levels
What are the potential risks in a childcare environment?
Immature immune systems, unrecognised hazards by children e.g, water spillage, washing tablets
Effects of abuse (long-term)
Low self esteem.
Anxious
Angry and tearful
Mental health issues such as depression or suicidal thoughts
Inability to sleep
Trust issues
