LO1: Computer Hardware Flashcards
What is an input device?
An input device is device that takes in data into a computer system
What is an output device?
An output device is a device that makes a response in the computer system
what is a Hardware?
Hardware are the physical parts of computer system
what is a motherboard?
A motherboard is a circuit boar (brain) of a computer system to connect all components.
What is Cache?
Cache is volatile.
it stores data that is frequently accessed and it’s a fast memory as its the closest memory to the CPU.
name the 4/5 main components of a computer?
Storage
Power supply unit
Processor
Motherboard
Graphics card (not always needed as processor may have graphic capabilities)
what does a processor do aka CPU? and state 3 characters of a CPU?
Controls the processes and operations of a computer
Characteristics:
- number of cores
- clock speed
- cache
what is a memory? and what are the two types?
Memory is a computer component that holds the instructions and data
The two types are: volatile and non-volatile
what is volatile and non volatile?
Volatile storage - temporary this means instructions ad data saved gets deleted wen the computer system isn’t powered
Non-Volatile - is storage that saves data even when the computer system isn’t powered
what is RAM?
state two characteristics?
Random access memory is volatile (temporary) it stores all running programmes that currently on
- Programmes are copied from storage to RAM so that the programme is able to access CPU
- size is usually 4-32 GB
What is ROM?
Read Only Memory it’s Non-Volatile storage that only store programmes that can’t be changed
