Who in health and social care can be vulnerable to harm and abuse?
Anyone working in health, social and childcare settings, and also could potentially include service users
Who can abuse be from?
Can be from:
- Staff members
- Managers/employers
- Family members
- Friends
- Other individuals who have access to the same settings
What is intentional abuse?
Deliberate behaviour
What is an example of intentional abuse?
A care assistant who supports an individual by helping them with their shopping and buys items for themselves is deliberately abusing the individual financially.
What is unintentional abuse?
Accidental behaviour
What is an example of unintentional abuse?
Harm and abuse can be caused through poor standards of care
What are some short-term effects of harm and abuse?
- Injuries - such as bruises, cuts or broken bones
- Unkempt - poor appearance, or looking thinner than usual
- Challenging behaviour - may present as aggressive, difficult or withdrawn
- STI - contracted through sexual abuse
- Low self-esteem or confidence - self-doubt, angry, anxious or tearful
What are some long-term effects of harm and abuse?
- Low self-esteem or depression
- Mistrust
- Inability to sleep
- Addiction
- Self-harm
- Disempowerment
- Difficulty trusting others
