What is the DH’s role in nutritional analysis and counselling?
A
- Recognize how the client’s nutrient intake may affect their oral health
- Understand how oral environment influences systemic health
- Understand & explain to clients the role of saliva, fluids and food play in the caries process
- Identify foods that stimulate salivary flow
- Recognize cariogenic foods
- Explain the use of ‘buffer foods’
- Propose cariostatic foods & timing to improve cariogenic diet

What is a food fad?
A
- A catchall term covering all aspects of nutritional nonsense, contains exaggerated beliefs about the value of nutrition in health and disease
- Can be based on truth or myth

What is a fad diet?
A
- Fad Diets: advertise a quick fix way to lose weight, gain health, slim down etc
- Frequently deficient in essential nutrients
- Eg; low carb, low fat, keto, juice cleanse, detoxes

What should you recommend to your clients and how do you combat nutritional misinformation?
A
- As a general guide, recommend balanced variety of foods, veg, fruit, carbs, protein
- If your client seems to be struggling with nutritional misinformation affecting their health, you can offer to make a referral to Nutritional Professional

- Dental History
- Intraoral/Extraoral Exam Forms
- Gingival assessment, Indicies
- Hard Tissue Chart, Radiographs, DDS Diagnosis

- These forms all play a role in determining client’s health/dental risks
