Mucius
A noble Roman youth, who had tried to assassinate Porsenna. He had failed, but had so impressed Porsenna with his bravery that he was allowed to go back to the Rome. His action also led Porsenna to ask the Romans for a truce, and so broke the siege.
Porsenna
King of Clusium, an important town belonging to the Etruscan tribe, a native race who lived in Italy near Rome.
Scaevola
‘Left-handed one’. Name given to Mucius as he loses his right hand when he puts it into the sacrificial fire after his capture by Porsenna.
Tarquins
Family of the final king of Rome, Tarquinus Superbus. They had been exiled by the Romans for their cruel and immoral behaviour, but have made an alliance with King Porsenna to besiege Rome and get back the throne.
Veii
An Etruscan town, 20 km north of Rome. The Romans had captured some of their lands. Porsenna gets the Romans to agree to give the captured land back.
Janiculum
A hill on the west bank of the Tiber opposite Rome. The name is connected with the early king Janus who was said to have a citadel here.

Horatius Cocles was a defender of Rome who fought alone on a bridge against the enemy.

a statue of a person on a horse. Usually reserved for great military commanders and leaders.
Via Sacra
the Via Sacra, was the main street of ancient Rome, leading from the top of the Capitoline Hill, through some of the most important religious sites of the Forum (where it is the widest street), to the Colosseum.
